Acquisitions in the USA and Italy serve to strengthen local presence and increase service network density

DORMA persistent in pursuit of growth strategy

The vision driving the DORMA 2020 program is to position DORMA as the globally trusted partner for holistic premium access solutions and services enabling better buildings. The brand claim “DORMA. The Access.” further underlines the company’s aspirations. In brief, DORMA intends to be seen as the synonym for access solutions. To realize this vision, DORMA is pursuing an ambitious growth program, with takeovers very much part of the plan. And the company has taken a further important step in this endeavor over the last few weeks with the acquisition of two companies: Door Controls in the USA and Skill in Italy.

“These two acquisitions serve to take our growth strategy, launched three years ago, a further significant step forward. Since 2010 we have now taken over ten companies – the largest transactions being the Canadian company RCI and the purchase of a major participating interest in the family-run Italian company ISEO in the last fiscal year. Against this background, the two most recent acquirees, Door Controls and Skill, serve to further underscore our claim to the position of globally trusted partner for holistic premium access solutions and services,” commented DORMA CEO Thomas P. Wagner.

The takeover of Door Controls Inc., one of the largest independent distributors of automatic doors in the USA, has enabled DORMA to further progress its expansion in North America. Already well represented in eastern USA on the installation and customer services front, DORMA’s acquisition of Door Controls – headquartered in Kansas City, Kansas – means that it can now also offer customers in the mid-west a similar range of holistic access solutions and services. “The door industry continues to provide us with a strong platform and one in which we want to accelerate our capabilities to provide our customers innovative door technology and premium access solutions and services,” explained Wil VandeWiel, Area President Americas. And Reed Buettner, CEO of Door Controls Inc. added: “The combination of Door Controls, Inc. and DORMA provides an excellent strategic and cultural fit. We are thrilled to join the DORMA Group."

Door Controls Inc. was founded in Topeka, Kansas, by Robert and Marcella Montgomery in 1943. They began the business with the belief that you should sell quality materials and back them up with fast and efficient service. This is still how Door Controls, Inc. does business today. Over the years the business grew and now there are 11 locations and 100 employees serving Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Illinois, Arkansas, and Texas. Door Controls, Inc has the largest service and repair centers in this area which is staffed with highly trained service personnel. Door Controls, Inc. is the largest distributor of automatic doors in the Midwest and is a complete source for automatic doors, controls, hardware and related service.

With its acquisition of the Italian company Skill S.r.l., DORMA has also strengthened its presence and its service network in northern Italy. “The market in Italy is significant to our growth strategy and with it’s enormous economic performance extremely important for the region Mediterranean,” commented Christoph Jacob, Area President Mediterranean/Middle East/Africa, in explaining the rationale behind the takeover.

Skill is involved in the fields of new equipment provision and systems servicing. Founded in 2010, the company focuses on the installation and maintenance of bespoke access solutions. Already today, Skill sells DORMA solutions, especially on the automatics side, together with related products such as fire doors or garage doors. “Skill has a large service network here, plus a large customer base and extensive expertise,” Jacob continued. Thus DORMA is not only extending its geographical presence; it is also able – in particular – to complement its service portfolio in northern Italy through expansion into related products, effectively implementing the principle of “One Stop Services” with single-source cover of all kinds of access solutions.
