Highlights in innovative drive technology I
“Galileo” – linear magnetic operator for sliding doors
Under its show slogan “Future now”, DORMA is presenting a plethora of innovative problem solutions as well as a new design devised to bring door closers and automatic door operators under a common style umbrella. Thus, for the first time, the door control sector is being provided with a single architectural design concept based on identical visual lines.
The presentation of the innovations on offer is broken down into standard products that are immediately available, prototypes soon to be put into production and concept studies and visions for the future illustrating development trends likely to be realised in the medium term. As a result, DORMA is demonstrating its resolve to be actively involved in shaping the future of door control hardware and automation systems and to further expand its market position with new dimensions in technological and design excellence.
Revolutionary linear drive technology for sliding doors
The most striking feature common to the innovations on show in Munich is the obviously deliberate all-encompassing development approach combining high performance and compact construction with integrated drive technology and completely new departures in engineering.
One revolution in the field of operator technology, for example, takes the form of the innovative “Galileo” magnetic sliding door operator, which both actuates and carries the door panels in a manner similar to that of a linear motor. By dispensing with all types of mechanical drive elements, the “Galileo” system operates virtually wear-free and is characterised by high opening speeds – applied even to heavy panels – of up to 1 m/s. The quietness of the system, achieved thanks to the low-noise linear drive, also allows for unilateral panel motions, while the integrated fast-response obstruction identification capability eliminates the impact risk. Any obstacles are detected almost instantly and the panel or panels currently in motion are then effectively brought to a halt.
A further plus of this new DORMA technology, scheduled to go into production in the medium term, derives from its compact construction, in which the operator profile has a cross section of no more than 60 x 80 mm. This enables the operator to be integrated in walls without problem. Yet even if surface-mounted and used, say, in conjunction with glass partitions, the visual effect of the “Galileo” is totally non-disruptive and wholly harmonious.
