DORMA Automatic Innovations II

“Kepler” – the operator that’s truly out of sight

Like door closers, door operators should be as invisible as possible while still offering optimum performance – at least that was the approach adopted by DORMA’s development engineers when they were given the task of optimising the company’s existing operator technology.

And so they went about further developing the already successful ITS 96 – DORMA’s concealed door closer – to determine the technical possibilities of creating a compact operator of high performance potential that can be integrated in either the door leaf or the frame.

The result of these efforts has been christened “Kepler”, measures 40 x 55 x 770 mm and disappears almost without trace into standard commercial doors.

A special drive technology imparts the required power to this “under cover” operator, thus enabling it to reliably open and close even heavy doors. In addition to the standard “Automatic”, a “Servo” mode can also be provided to guarantee gentle opening and closing of the door. The configuration is thus ideally suited to door automation for disabled access in the project sector and also to satisfying the requirements for barrier-free physical environments.

The study showcased in Munich is expected to be developed to commercialisation in the not too distant future, offering a perfect combination of user convenience and visual elegance.

The “Kepler” revolution: DORMA’s fully functional, concealed door operator can be integrated within a recess in a door leaf of just 40 mm wide and 50 mm deep and, although invisible, is capable of moving even heavy doors. Although essentially an “under cover operator”, this super-athlete is on show in Munich as a concept study. Aside from the normal automatic function it also offers a disabled-access Servo drive mode with gentle opening and closing functions. Photo: DORMA

This cross-sectional drawing illustrates the actual installation situation, while at the same time revealing the compact design of the “Kepler” operator. The post and rail frame specialist Forster (Hall B2 / Stand 303/402) has the technology to ensure that this swing door operator is sufficiently securely installed to ensure for years of trouble-free service.
