Safety + Security

Panic hardware interfaced with emergency escape lock range

In projects, the highest priority is assigned to ensuring that emergency escape routes, while still offering undelayed egress in the event of a hazard, are secure against abuse. Two different systems are currently vying for the national market:
a lock and handle or pushplate per EN 179 (emergency exit device), and the panic exit device per EN 1125 in which a horizontal bar extends across the entire width
of the door. In order to ensure compliance with the principles of free trade within Europe, these two standards have been harmonised since 1 April 2003. Conforming products can thus carry the CE mark even where doors are secured by means of a mortise lock, as in Germany.

At “BAU 2005”, the Munich construction trade show, DORMA will be exhibiting for the first time a solution from its Panic Hardware product line as a prototype in the form of the PHA 2500 (Crossbar) for a double-leaf narrow-stile door combined
with an emergency escape lock system. DORMA has been in possession of the certificate of conformity for its PHA 2500 series for single-leaf doors as a complete system since November 2004. The market launch date is scheduled for April 2005. A system for double-leaf doors will be available from June 2005.

The PHA 2500 exit device from the DORMA Panic Hardware range is characterised by a clever combination of harmonious design and impressive technology: no visible fixings, satisfaction of the “low projection” requirement per EN 1125 (projection of the fitting from the face of the door < 100 mm) and the use of an electronic cylinder with a mechanical knob/thumbturn.

The trade show exhibit will take the form of a PHA 2500 system with a lock in the active leaf based on a backset of 35 mm top and bottom, in conjunction with a strike box. The device is suitable for door widths up to 1300 mm.

The usual panic lock features – Mode of operation B / Change-over function;
Mode of operation E / Transmission function; Mode of operation D / Transit function – are all available. Moreover, the DORMA electric strikes 442, 447 and 117 RS for fire and smoke check doors may also be combined as accessories with this system.

The solution is rounded off through inclusion of the OGRO ZS project lever handle range based on EN 1906. In addition, special lever handles customised on the basis of the OGRO Create architecture programme may also be used.

On show in Munich is this solid and compact solution for emergency exits in the form of the PHA 2500 exit device from DORMA’s Panic Hardware product line in combination with an emergency escape lock. This multi-variant composite device reconciles the two major concerns: building security on the one hand and unimpeded emergency escape on the other. The PHA 2500 will be available in various finishes including mock stainless steel, powder-coated silver and a range of special colours. Photo: DORMA
