Functionality and aesthetic elegance in heavy-duty applications

DORMA hones its portfolio in the “Public” domain

Ennepetal, Germany. Offering persuasive system solutions for the public sector with applications even more tightly defined, DORMA is once again poised to showcase its extensive capabilities at BAU 2009. In order to meet the associated requirements to even better effect, the company has divided its products and services into three application-related subsegments: “Travelling” covers DORMA’s offerings for projects characterised by high volumes of public transit and destination traffic. Grouped together under the “Meeting” heading are solutions designed to meet the specific room design and spatial demands that typify day-to-day business activities, while the “Shopping” product subsegment meets the requirements of modern retail malls and stores.

The extensive product range incorporated within the Public portfolio offers the usual high level of functionality and sophisticated aesthetics expected of the DORMA brand. Resilience, safety, security and flexibility likewise play an important role – as in the case of the new ED 250 and ED 100 electro-mechanical swing door operators and the TS 99 FL free-swing door closer. The number of products exhibiting the multiple award-winning DORMA Contur design has been extended for further visual integrity. And also new is the DORMA Premium range of door furniture from DORMA Beschlagtechnik GmbH: with optimised technology, a modified design and an enhanced product range, it constitutes the next generation of high-quality door furniture formerly associated with the OGRO label. This was incorporated into the DORMA brand effective January 1, 2009, further underlining DORMA’s single-source credentials.

“Travelling” – high-performance solutions for safe traffic flows
Airports, railway stations, exhibition buildings and multi-functional stadia represent the kind of extreme demands placed on access systems within the “Travelling” subsegment. The elements installed must not only be highly resilient but also guarantee safe, efficient and convenient user flow guidance and control. An enticing, generous design that blends harmoniously within the overall interior appearance is also essential.

Among the products on show at BAU 2009, DORMA’s electro-mechanical swing door operators ED 100 and ED 250 will be revealing their particular strengths in this domain. Facilitating barrier-free accessibility, these two easy-to-install operators are designed for door leaf weights of 100 and 250 kg respectively. Despite their more slender appearance – the view face height is just 70 millimetres – they are both exceptionally powerful performers. Hence they are also recommended for high-use entrances and applications in which fast pedestrian flows need to be guaranteed. Integrated functions such as the low-energy mode and the temperature management programme for controlling the drive output and preventing overload offer particular advantages. And the “Initial Drive Control” also regularly monitors the operating behaviour of the unit, automatically optimising its characteristics as necessary. Thanks to their multi-speed gearing, moreover, the ED 100 and ED 250 are exceptionally quiet operators. As an additional benefit, the doors can be manually opened without significant physical effort. Both systems can also be expanded to order using upgrade cards. For example, the “Full Energy” module enables utilisation of the entire performance range of the drive unit, increasing the opening speeds that can be implemented. Double door sets can also be more effectively controlled with the aid of the “Professional Card”, by means of which each door leaf becomes individually operable. Further upgrade cards support wind load compensation control and fire protection functions.

The new TS 99 FLR in the DORMA Contur design likewise ensures smooth access while enhancing the visual harmony of the architectural hardware installed. This slide channel door closer is used as a hold-open unit operating in conjunction with a smoke detector system. Its free-swing function means that doors of up to 1,250 mm in width can be opened with only a minimum degree of effort. The door is automatically closed by the spring in the unit only in the event of an alarm or power failure and hence remains freely operable under normal conditions – an advantage particularly in the case of heavy-use entrances. The closer is suitable for both single and double doors and, thanks to its high-quality appearance, coordinates well with its surroundings.

“Meeting” – free-flow room configurations and multi-functional space utilisation
Achieving a perfect blend between functionality and design excellence is particularly important in the public and business environments served by the “Meeting” product subsegment. Office areas, conference centres, educational and leisure facilities, hotels and universities rely not only on efficient spatial layouts but also on the variability of those configurations to achieve maximum resource utilisation – a demand that DORMA meets with impressive aplomb.

The MOVEO Glass partition system, for example, offers a clever combination of attractive transparency and optimum sound protection (with Rw reduction indices of up to 50 decibels), enhanced by refined operational convenience and a high degree of variability. It can thus be used to augment not only conference and seminar rooms or create small individual offices but also to divide VIP lounges from adjacent public access areas or smoking from non-smoking zones – with each space adaptable to prevailing demands. The full-face glazing of the dual-skin wall systems creates a generous, open-plan feel to the layout, while the slender frames ensure maximum transparency. Meanwhile, all the conventional advantages associated with the classic MOVEO partition range are retained in full. For example, extension and retraction of the strip seals in the individual elements is electronically controlled via the “ComforTronic” system for true operating ease, eliminating the need for specialist knowledge.

A clear, unique and unmistakeable product “family trait” is provided by the DORMA Contur design, recipient of Germany’s renowned “Red Dot” design award, a visual concept that ideally reconciles the requirements of sophisticated architecture and elevated functional appeal. Offering one look for a range of different systems, DORMA at BAU 2009 is showcasing products from its various divisions all sporting the unifying Contur features. Within the modular DORMA Panic Hardware portfolio, three door fittings based on this prestigious design will also be on show at the construction trade fair: the PHA 2500, the PHA 2000 and the PHB 3000 in which a so-called touchbar serves as the release device.

“Shopping” – visual delights offering innovative convenience
Modern shopping centres tend to feature exceptional architecture and systems offering clear visitor guidance with the best possible ease of ingress and egress. Within its “Shopping” subsegment, therefore, DORMA has placed its focus on high-quality materials, creative design and innovative technologies. The DORMA Premium range of prestigious door furniture from DORMA Beschlagtechnik GmbH is predestined to create the exclusive look often required in such applications. While Premium line comprises products of exceptional quality and tailored architectural solutions, the DORMA Plus and DORMA Pure ranges – also new – offer competitively priced, standardised door furniture sets.
