Burj Khalifa: Around 13,000 doors equipped with DORMA products
Major order managed in collaboration with Häfele grosses more than €10 million
Ennepetal/Dubai. By the time the celebrations to mark the opening of the Burj Khalifa take place at the beginning of January 2010, DORMA – working in harness with distribution partner Häfele – will have provided products for a total of around 13,000 doors in this incredible high-rise. “With a sales volume equivalent to well over ten million euro, this is one of the biggest orders in the history of our company. And we are tremendously proud to have been part of such a globally renowned project,” declared DORMA CEO Dr. Michael Schädlich.
The products were manufactured at various German and international sites belonging to the DORMA Group. Eight large and especially designed automatically operated DORMA revolving doors have been installed for the ultimate in user convenience at the entrances of the mega-skyscraper which, at 818 metres, is the highest building in the world. These automatic doors were produced in the company’s Cologne factory, the high-quality door closer systems were manufactured at DORMA’s main site in Ennepetal, and the bespoke glass fittings and accessories were made in Detmold. However, a large proportion of the products came from DORMA’s production sites outside Germany – mainly the USA. The reason: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill of Chicago, USA, the architects charged with planning and designing the Burj Khalifa, made a point of seeking out manufacturers of products that complied with both US and European standards. Dr. Schädlich explains: “The architects wanted the best producers of both regulated worlds. DORMA was one of the few manufacturers worldwide able to meet this requirement on a single-source basis.” And indeed, the company was able to place products from all five of its divisions in the Burj Khalifa.
DORMA saw off the fiercest of international competition to win the prestigious project contract. Among the decisive advantages that it was able to offer was its ability to provide comprehensive system expertise encompassing the full range of products and services available from within the Group, together with the benefits of an international network comprised of sites and offices able to deliver service and support on a direct, local basis.
