DORMA among the Top 100 in innovation
Project mentor Lothar Späth presents award to specialists with a handle on system solutions circling the door
DORMA, Ennepetal (Germany), was awarded the Top 100 seal of approval in recognition of its outstanding achievements in innovation. This accolade is awarded as part of the nationwide benchmarking survey of the same name, in which Professor Nikolaus Franke of the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration investigates the innovation management capability of medium-sized businesses in Germany. The best one hundred companies, which includes DORMA GmbH + Co. KG, are now entitled to display the Top 100 seal for 2006. Project mentor Lothar Späth handed this award to DORMA director research and development Michael Glanz during the meeting of the top innovative firms on Zugspitze mountain.
Lothar Späth had these words of praise for the companies: "The Top 100 are not afraid to excel. The way they blend technological expertise and business acumen brings them commercial success, while their constant striving for innovation generates new jobs. This dedication to excellence is a driving force behind growth in Germany". A constant flow of technical innovations together with unconventional design is the basis for success at DORMA. Its management team has created an environment that is geared towards encouraging innovation – the clear separation between technical and product development, for example, ensures optimum productivity is achieved in both fields, while bonus schemes provide an additional incentive for thinking outside the box. DORMA's specialised products and system solutions are implemented in a wide range of areas, including door technology, security systems, electronic access control and space division systems. The multinational company holds more than 400 German and international patents. At "BAU 2005", Europe's leading trade fair for the construction industry, it showcased a total of 15 new developments, three of which were world firsts.
Prof. Franke investigates five key aspects of innovation management: commercial success, the company's climate of innovation, its innovative processes and organisation, how innovation-friendly its senior management is and the way it markets its innovative products. Every year, Professor Franke uses a standardised procedure to establish the hundred most innovative participants in the TOP 100 study. Out of some 1,750 companies from all over Germany that registered an interest, just under 200 ultimately took up the challenge. Those that made it into this exclusive circle are featured on the website at www.top100.de and in the book which accompanies the project "Top 100 2006 – Germany's most innovative medium-sized businesses".
