DORMA's "heart cam" technology at IEM 2004
Innovative door closers, panic hardware plus OGRO door furniture and fittings
Ennepetal/Germany. In keeping with tradition, DORMA will again be presenting a wide range of innovations at this year's IEM. Amongst the main attractions will be its door closer technology with two new developments featuring the heart-shaped cam being showcased under the headline slogan "Hearts captivate the world", plus the Panic Hardware portfolio and new fittings from OGRO.
Compact TS-A slide channel door closer with heart-shaped cam
With its design study featuring the surface-mounted TS-A slide-channel door closer being shown for the first time in Cologne, DORMA is specifically addressing the more creatively minded architect. The elegant, stylish closer impresses by virtue of its compact dimensions, its cubic design with smooth, single-piece front plate, the concealed fixing points and - as in the case of the premium closers ITS 96 and TS 93/92/91 already in the DORMA portfolio - the proven technology of the heart-shaped cam.
The closer can be installed via its mounting bracket both on the door leaf and on the frame transom so that it is flush with the top edge of the door. Its straight-lined, single-piece cover with internal end caps further enhances the overall appearance. With an overall body depth of just 37 mm, a height of 49 mm and a length of 340 mm, plus a vertically adjustable slide channel of identical length that lines up perfectly with the closer body, this new compact closer - non-handed thanks to its universal punched arm - impresses both through its minimal dimensions and its performance capabilities.
As in the case of the DORMA premium closers ITS 96 or TS 93, it offers a rapidly decreasing opening torque, infinitely variable closing force and a latching action that ensures secure closing every time. With spring strength settings in the range EN 2-4 conveniently adjustable from the side, it covers a wide range of applications up to a maximum door width of 1100 mm. The hydraulic functions such as closing speed and latching action are adjusted from above. The cushioned limit stay integrated in the slide channel (max. 130°) protects both the channel and door from damage.
The TS-A is compliant with EN 1154 and the CE mark is also expected to be awarded shortly. In addition, this closer offers quality-assured reliability to ISO 9001.
DORMA cam-action technology now also available in the price-sensitive segment DORMA is also showcasing a standard closer that offers a new departure in terms of both styling and technology. This competitively priced slide-channel closer with a spring strength of EN 3 features the famous DORMA heart-shaped cam actuator more typically associated with the premium segment served by DORMA's ITS 96 and TS 93/92/91 closers. The new product - the TS 90 Impulse - marries this technology to an attractive styling to create a truly a top product for the standard-equipment segment.
The unique, compact design with a length of 246 mm, a height of 56 mm and a depth of 46 mm minimises the body volume to precisely the space required for the internal closer mechanism. This results in a cast aluminium casing that tapers towards a narrow front face, with bearing blocks extending from it top and bottom for the closer spindle that operates the slide arm. The spindle in turn is actuated by the well-known heart-shaped DORMA cam to ensure that the door can be opened with the utmost ease. Like the closer body, the slide channel profile also tapers towards the front, describing a segment curve.
Concealed by the cover assembly, the TS 90 Impulse can be fixed directly without a mounting backplate, and with four different installation positions, the same unit is capable of covering virtually every application. The closing speed can be adjusted to requirements via two control valves in the ranges 160-15° and 15-0°. This non-handed closer is available in the colours silver and white (similar to RAL 9016) and corresponds to corrosion class 3. The TS 90 Impulse made by DORMA is manufactured in accordance with the conditions specified in ISO 9001, is tested for compliance with EN 1154 and, following completion of the test procedure, will carry the CE mark.
Panic Hardware combined with automatic SVP emergency escape locks Protected against abuse yet instantly operable when danger arises, doors in emergency exits and escape routes are given the highest priority in terms of the equipment specifications applied in major building projects. However, the systems preferred in the international market can sometimes differ from those demanded by the domestic sector.
At IEM, DORMA is presenting a prototype of an integrated solution comprising a modified SVP 5000 lock and the DORMA PHA 2000 pushbar. This solution comes in the form of a modular concept which, following pending tests, will be available as a certified PHA 2500 system ready for shipment. The external fittings take the form of lever handles from the OGRO Standard range.
The prototype being shown in Cologne is a panic device manufactured to ISO 9001 with an aluminium casing and a lock mechanism designed to operate in conjunction with a Europrofile or Swiss round cylinder. It is suitable for concealed installation on timber and metal framed doors up to 1300 mm in width. The lock, which is released by operation of the pushbar, is a modified automatically engaging or simple-action panic lock with a backset of 35, 45, 55, 60 or 65 mm.
With this modular kit expected to become available in the fourth quarter, DORMA has once again underlined its exceptional competence in the fields of panic hardware and emergency exit security, as well as enhancing its furniture and fittings portfolio for project doors.
Building design at the detail level: OGRO Create fittings
With its "Create" range launched at BAU 2003, OGRO is able to offer design-minded architects the possibility of integrating door and window fittings within their interior concept. At the IEM in Cologne, the company is presenting a current example of just such a cooperation in the form of the ZS 8951 lever handle series in stainless steel.
The creation stems from the pen of architect and designer Claudia de Bruyn and was developed for inclusion in the generously appointed DKV Retirement Home in Bremen. The straight lines of the handle shape are complemented by an oiled oak insert which not only provides a vivid contrast to the cool metal but also offers a warm, thoroughly hand-pleasing surface. Other types of wood coordinated with specific interior designs are also available for different applications - for example in office rooms or hotels.
OGRO anti-tamper security fittings for entrance doors combine long backplate and rose
In launching its new anti-tamper security system SI17xx with cylinder core-pull protection, OGRO has put an end to the visual discord in homes where the interior doors are equipped with roses while the inside faces of entrance doors carry a long backplate. The combination of long backplate on the external face of the door and rose on the internal face enables the security function to be effectively combined with a harmonious appearance without any compromise in either respect.

The new OGRO anti-tamper security fitting provides reliable protection with its long backplate for the door exterior, while the rose on the door interior face ensures an undisrupted, harmonious appearance within the home. Instead of the design with the fixed dead knob on the exterior face, a version with a lever handle is also possible
