Expo 2000 - Planet Bertelsmann

Is this going to be the defining symbol of this year’s EXPO? The oval structure, the planet, "floats" on steel supports 9 metres above the EXPO Plaza. With a rise of 26 metres, its widest points measure 46 x 36 metres. The outer skin takes the form of intricately woven spiral strips of stainless steel. In daylight, the metal elements literally shimmer, while at night they are made to sparkle and glow by a light show extravaganza.

A fascinating contribution from Bertelsmann AG, the third largest media group in the world. The basic design comes from Karl Karau of Triad Architekten with Axel Büther and Becker Gewers Kühn & Kühn Architekten; construction planning by Architekturbüro Kehrer, Berlin. The door hardware for the entire complex was supplied by DORMA - represented by over 130 products in this case.
