What today is known as the old San Miguel de los Reyes Monastery is an architectural and historical complex that is described as: an Islamic farmhouse; a Cistercian monastery, Sant Bernat de Rascanya, a Jeronium monastery, San Miguel de los Reyes and a prison complex. All these buildings were built step by step during a long period and were modified, transformed, enlarged and the previous buildings began to be demolished little by little.

The old San Miguel de los Reyes Monastery’s restoration and remodelation is the Valentian Library’s headquarters, leaving a testimony of each of these historical episodes. Today a visit to San Miguel de los Reyes lets us take a look at its beginnings up to these modern times.
