Ennepetal/Munich, Germany. These days, the boundaries between innovative architectural design concepts for contemporary office spaces and private homes are often very fluid. The same can also be said for many DORMA products – they are ideal wherever they are used. It is for this reason that this premium provider has combined the two areas – living and working – within one dedicated themed zone at the fair BAU in Munich: Residential/Office showcases appealing integrated door solutions that can also be examined virtually. Large touch screens allow visitors to view the products and applications in 3D.
Manually operated swing, double-action and sliding doors in all-glass type of construction remain very much in demand in interior design applications. They provide an open, transparent ambience and, by allowing maximum natural light into the building, even actively help to reduce energy costs.
The patented BEYOND system is exhibited in conjunction with a single-leaf all-glass double-action door. A key feature of the BEYOND pivot bearing relates to the secondary closing edge of glass doors: The fitting extends down the full length of the glass edge, thereby eliminating the risk of trapped fingers in this location. This design-oriented solution functions to the same degree of precision, whether fitted to single- or double-leaf doors and whether fixed to masonry or to a glass side panel. The pivot point lies along an extension of the glass edge and thus maximizes the through-passage width of the door. To round off the display, the fitting on show in Munich is combined with a BEYOND pull handle in the same design.
DORMA VISUR is a unique hardware solution. The functional elements including the glass retaining fixings are located in the floor and in the ceiling or lintel – away from the door and therefore virtually invisible. As a new option, VISUR can be combined with glass side panels. Here, the glass door appears to float in the air without any fixings, offering remarkable creative freedom in terms of the interior architecture. VISUR is suitable for double-action doors with a maximum width of 1,100 mm and a maximum weight of 85 kg. An RTS 85 transom-concealed door closer means the door will also shut automatically after use.
The TENSOR hinge system with integrated closing function is another attractive solution for installing double-action doors. Regardless of whether the hinges are required for new builds or refurbishments, they can be fixed directly to the masonry or the door frame. For timber frames, a special mounting backplate can be recessed into the wood. The version with glass side panels has a particularly elegant appearance. TENSOR is suitable for maximum door leafs with a weight of 65 kg and a width of up to 1,000 mm, for single doors as well as for double-leaf doors. In all cases, a spring mechanism in the hinge guides the door back to the required zero position. This means that there is no need for a door closer, and in turn no work is required to the floor or ceiling. Moreover, TENSOR boasts an extremely long service life: It comes with a TÜV verification for its durability over more than 500,000 operating cycles.
A number of features have been added to the proven AGILE sliding door system with DORMOTION, a convenient cushioning mechanism that is hidden from sight. One improvement is a new carrier with an adhesive bonding system for the use of laminated safety glass. The system is suitable for glass thicknesses from 8 to 13.5 mm. Whether the sliding element is made from safety glass or timber, AGILE DORMOTION offers interior outfitters a wealth of combination options and variants with wall, ceiling or glass-to-glass fixing.
In line with the hassle-free criterion as a defined aspect of the new brand strategy, the installation of a CS 80 MAGNEO sliding door operator is an ideal solution for offices and private homes alike. Powered by the magnetic and therefore non-contact thrust wave of a linear motor, the operator opens and closes the door element virtually noiselessly. This high level of convenience is also available in conjunction with timber panels.
PREMIUM lever handles will likewise be showcased to optimum effect in Munich. They offer planners, architects and outfitters a huge range of different designs for timber and narrow-stile doors. But where other manufacturers would resort to a conventional samples wall, the lever handles are presented here in small door boxes. Featuring images and small demo models, each box tells a different story. One focuses on a coffee shop, another is all about retail experiences in a modern shopping mall, while yet others examine the particular atmosphere of a railway station and a sport stadium. Each box showcases the relevant PREMIUM lever handle and illustrates how it enhances the door in the given setting.

Wherever trapped fingers at the secondary closing edges of glass doors could be a major problem, the inherent anti-pinch safety of the BEYOND full-length pivot fitting offers an effective solution. (BAU13_BEYOND)
Even when applied to large, heavy sliding door panels of timber, toughened safety glass or laminated safety glass, the AGILE 150 DORMOTION mechanism safely and reliably decelerates their momentum, latching them at both their open and closed positions.
On all-glass doors or – as shown here – on timber panels, the CS 80 MAGNEO offers a high degree of comfort and convenience.
A spring integrated within the TENSOR double-action hinge reliably returns the door to its preset zero point after every opening and closing cycle.
With installation of the main hardware components in the lintel and floor, a glass panel fitted with the VISUR double-action ensemble appears to almost float.
