DORMA strengthens German business base

Customers to benefit from faster processes and single-source supply

Ennepetal, Germany. In conjunction with the DORMA 2020 growth strategy, the DORMA Group has decided upon the realignment of its activities in Germany. The aim is to strengthen the company’s competitiveness on its home market over the long term and to align its products and services specifically to customer require-ments.

“The purpose of the realignment is to position ourselves in the marketplace as the reliable global partner for premium access solutions and allied services. Focusing our entire business on the requirements of our customers is therefore simply essential,” said Thomas P. Wagner, CEO of the DORMA Group.


New sales and service structure

Sales and service in Germany is to be restructured and amalgamated into three regional organizations: North/East, West and South. There are also plans to open additional sales offices in Germany’s major conurbations. In introducing this new sales and service footprint, DORMA intends to improve customer prox-imity and also offer its clientèle all products and services on a single-source basis.


Faster processes through consolidation of production and logistics

In order to serve its customers more quickly and efficiently with innovative tech-nologies and solutions going forward, the company is consolidating its production and logistics at fewer sites.


As part of this process, the company headquarters in Ennepetal it is to be ex-panded as the Group’s European technology center and primary components manufacturing facility. To this end, DORMA is transferring its electronics manu-facturing and assembly and its stainless steel machining and assembly opera-tions to the Ennepetal site. They are currently at different locations in Germany. DORMA’s competences in the fields of access control and "smart doors,” as well as in relation to mechanical and mechatronic products, are also to be expanded. Hence, the company will also be investing more in research and development at its Ennepetal HQ.


Products in the lower market segments and those heavily in demand in the emerging markets, such as the BTS 75v floor spring currently being manufac-tured in Ennepetal and Brazil, will in future be produced in Singapore.


There is also to be a further central production plant in Europe, in the Bavarian town of Zusmarshausen, for the integrated manufacture of DORMA’s sliding door systems. In Rietberg near Bielefeld, a new site is under development specifically for the Sanitary (Shower Systems) and Glass Doors businesses cur-rently based in Bad Salzuflen. Meanwhile, the main European warehousing and logistics activities are to be centralized in Wuppertal. This means that DORMA will be supplying all key European markets from Germany in the future.


Meanwhile, the Velbert site will be exclusively manufacturing premium door furni-ture products, e.g. the Premium range of lever handles. These products will be managed and marketed under the strong and widely known OGRO product brand.


The sites in Detmold and Cologne are to close within the next two years.
