DORMA success around the globe

Ennepetal. From Frankfurt Airport and the subway in Suzhou to the football stadium of the San Francisco 49ers and blast-resistant door installations at the seat of the United Nations in New York, DORMA is a much sought-after supplier when it comes to enabling better buildings.

Expanding DORMA’s international presence in strategically important markets constitutes one of the main building blocks of the DORMA 2020 push for growth. Through acquisitions, joint ventures and the opening of new subsidiaries, DORMA is developing sales markets and extending its product portfolio to further enhance its ability to offer integrated solutions “circling the door”. In the course of its 2011/12 financial year, for example, the DORMA Group acquired the company Florida Door Control Inc., one of the largest independent suppliers of automatic doors in the USA. And in China, DORMA established the joint venture Yantai DORMA Tri-Circle Lock Co. together with a renowned Chinese lock manufacturer. In addition, the family-owned company headquartered in Ennepetal opened subsidiaries in Uruguay, Qatar, Malaysia and South Korea. DORMA is also investing in research and development in major emerging markets. During the fiscal year just passed, for example, the company set up research and development centers in both Singapore and Indonesia. And in October of this year, DORMA acquired 40 percent of the family-owned Italian company ISEO. With this, the DORMA Group has extended its product portfolio through the addition of new and complementary lock cylinders and master key systems, locks and panic exit devices.

Design excellence and aesthetic elegance are at the core of the brand promise embodied in the DORMA name. Innovative and design-oriented products and solutions also contribute to the international success enjoyed by the company: During the last financial year, for example, DORMA sold more than one million door closers in the Asia-Pacific/Australia area for the first time. DORMA products can be found in many an award-winning building – from the Federal Chancellery in Berlin to Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the highest skyscraper in the world. Renowned clients around the globe choose DORMA as their partner for premium access solutions and allied services, as a glance at the company’s “areas” reveals:

A new city district is currently under construction in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh, with a total area of 1.6 square kilometers and more than 40 separate buildings. The intention is to establish the King Abdullah Financial District as a leading financial center in the Middle East. DORMA products also score big in the major sports associated with the Americas, especially football. And the DORMA Group supplied the custom HSW horizontal sliding walls installed at the venue. The order value in this case was more than US$ 3 million.

DORMA has also developed a tailored product solution for the United Nations in New York, the building of which has to comply with the highest security standards. To this end, Crane collaborated with Benson Industries, North America’s leading glass supplier.

DORMA’s brand promise of design excellence and aesthetic elegance means that the company offers an ideal match with the luxury fashion brand, Burberry. DORMA supplied a unique revolving door from Crane as the company’s avant-garde entrance ensemble of stainless steel on the Magic Mile in Chicago. And around the world, further Burberry flagship stores are at the planning stage, with orders for further such doors in the offing.

Thanks to its excellent transport communications, Suzhou – a city not far from Shanghai with over 4 million inhabitants of its own – is regarded as a boom town in today’s modern China. In all, four subway lines are planned, combining in a total length of 140 kilometers (around 88 miles). Line 1 is already open, and the entire network is expected to be completed within the next four to eight years.

In Brisbane, Australia, DORMA won a project in the health sector, an area in which this premium supplier sees huge business potential for the future. This order was for the Queensland Children’s Hospital designed by the renowned Australian architectural group Conrad Gargett. DORMA’s contribution included almost 2000 units of the TS 93 door closer alone. This system stands apart not only because of its high-quality design but also and particularly due to its exceptional ease of use and fully controlled closing action – an indispensable feature in healthcare facilities especially.
