DORMA’s German sites all now switched to green electricity

Clear commitment to alternative energies

DORMA’s German sites all now switched to green electricity

Ennepetal. The start of 2012 has heralded a new era for DORMA. Since January of this year, all 16 of the company’s German sites have been operating exclusively on green electricity supplied from hydro-electric power stations. The supply agreement with utility AVU, Gevelsberg, will initially run for two years.

“Environmentally compatible development is integral to our corporate culture. This switch to green electricity is a logical extension of our many initiatives in the sustainability domain,” explains DORMA CEO, Thomas P. Wagner. The DORMA Environmental Management System has already been certified, having received registration to ISO 14001 at the end of November 2010. And DORMA’s Energy Management System also meets the requirements of DIN EN 16001. Moreover, many of the company’s products – such as its award-winning TS 93 door closers – today also satisfy the highest environmental standards.

DORMA’s unequivocal commitment to energy-efficient and environmentally sound development is also underpinned by numerous past activities. For example, the DORMA Hüppe site at Ocholt/Westerstede in Germany has, since 2010, been using heating energy from a biomass power plant, while last year saw the installation of a combined power and heat plant at the company’s main facility and HQ in Ennepetal.

Having now switched entirely to green electricity, DORMA has, at a stroke, improved the eco-balance of its products, thus further contributing to climate protection and improving the sustainability of buildings.

The change-over to electricity from hydro-electric power sources not only makes ecological sense, it also brings the company distinct financial benefits. Because procurement of exclusively green power from natural energy resources from a central provider brings the company cost reductions of well over 20 per cent. Over the two-year duration of the supply agreement, this means savings totalling €1.4 million.
