DORMA’s World of Access in New York officially launched

With Two AIA-Accredited Panel Discussions

DORMA’s World of Access in New York officially launched

New York/Ennepetal. Despite challenging economic and political forces and record unemployment in Europe, many American architects are still working there, exporting their design expertise. This was the central theme of a panel discussion held on December 3 at DORMA’s World of Access Design Center in New York City.

A gathering of distinguished architects, designers and journalists met there December 3 and 4 as part of the Design Center’s Grand Opening. World of Access serves the architectural design community with information, guidance and direct experience on doors, hardware and access technology. The center also provides accredited continuing education programs, instructional sessions, product and service introductions, and additional events serving the design community.

The Dec. 3 panel discussion was one of two AIA-accredited continuing-education presentations. Rebooting Europe: How Architects are Responding to Difficult Times on the Continent, examined the role of American and European architects on the continent as economic and political forces change. Panel members were Clifford Pearson, deputy editor, Architectural Record magazine; Dr. Thomas Welter, secretary general, Federal Association of German Architects BDA; David Piscuskas, principal, 1100 ARCHITECT; and Dr. Dietmar Danner, editor-in-chief, AIT Magazine.

The Dec. 4 discussion, Made Here: German Architecture and Design in New York City, considered what it means to be a German designer/architect practicing in New York. Panel members were Matthias Neumann, principal of normaldesign LLC, Brooklyn; Philipp von Dalwig, AIA, principal of MANIFOLD Architecture Studio (MAS); and Juergen Riehm, principal, 1100 ARCHITECT. Program introduction and opening remarks were delivered by Wil VandeWiel, president, DORMA Americas; Dr. Danner; and Dr. Welter.

The World of Access Design Center embodies contemporary design, including an 8,500 square foot space built of glass and steel and furnished with classic pieces by Vitra, USM Haller and Knoll. It is equipped with full video capabilities and a database of case studies that make it possible to see and feel how DORMA products will work in actual projects. Visitors benefit from the assistance of staff members who possess deep architectural and design experience.
