A prominent location deserving excellence in architecture and design
Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre
Even in the strongest wind conditions the DORMA ED250A
DORMA hardware provided the optimum in high durability
The Giant’s Causeway is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern Ireland and comprises over 40,000 hexagonal basalt columns that step down from the foot of the cliff into the sea.
Surrounded by cliffs on Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast World Heritage site, the Visitor Centre was designed by competition winning architects Heneghan Peng to replicate and blend into the surrounding coastal and agricultural landscape.
The polished basalt columns that form the façade are an architectural interpretation of the causeway stones. The building was carefully sculpted to fit into its landscape to be both invisible and visible - invisible from the cliffside, yet recognisable when approached by land.
Quite rightly, the project was nominated for the Stirling Prize 2013.
The windy conditions at the Giant’s Causeway Centre required an automatic door operator which could reliably and efficiently close the doors after activation. The DORMA ED250A automatic swing door operator with its unique Wind Load Control feature ensures external doors function correctly, even in the strongest wind conditions.
The DORMA ED250A’s Wind Load Control feature automatically compensates for wind loads with a force of up to 150N by tailoring the door’s driving behaviour appropriately to the prevailing weather conditions, while the adjustable electronic latching action helps the door to close properly, eliminating wind load problems and helping to reduce the building’s carbon footprint.
High volumes of visitor traffic expected at the site also represented a major challenge when providing safe access and egress. To this end Architectural Ironmonger MB Architectural chose DORMA hardware to provide the optimum in high durability for circulation routes and corridors. Products included 35 x TS83 rack and pinion heavy duty size EN6 closers due to over-height 2.8m doors, 5 x BTS80 double action floor springs and 9000 series touchbar panic hardware to provide secure dual-point door locking and easy egress when required.
