Architectural solutions that are a real education.
Bestehornpark, Aschersleben, Germany
The German town of Aschersleben, known as the "Gateway to the Harz" (a region of great natural beauty) has in its midst a real architectural gem: the educational campus "Bildungszentrum Bestehornpark". In renovating and converting the former Bestehorn paper mill on the three-hectare site, the architects Lederer Ragnasdóttir Oei of Stuttgart rewrote the rule book for educational architecture in the state of Sachsen-Anhalt.
The campus is to house two primary schools, a secondary school and an institute of further education. The interior of the building offers a striking mix of minimalist design and straight-lined styling. Barrier-free access and creative concepts have been beautifully reconciled – for example through the use of cam-action door closers of the type ITS 96, these being almost invisibly integrated in door constructions of varying types throughout the build. The rapid decrease in opening torque that they offer meets in full the ease-of-use requirements of the German code DIN SPEC 1104.
In order to meet the wear and tear of this school-based application, DORMA worked closely with the architects in the development of a functional yet visually elegant solution for the door handle backplates. The architects’ semicircular plate design added an attractive visual element that not only protects the door but also superbly matches the interior styling adopted for the project.
It is a solution that once again underlines the benefits available with the DORMA Create customising programme that provides architects and designers with the means to fashion premium-quality door furniture to suit their particular project.
