High School (Neues Gymnasium) - Bochum (GER)

Schools and universities count among the most important buildings – whether private or municipal – of any metropolis. And architecture in this field too is undergoing something of a revolution, because people have become aware that good buildings promote the learning process.

Inspiring Concepts

Architecture and spatial configuration affect our psyche. Hence individual and inspirational concepts are very much the order of the day.

An exceptional school building was recently constructed in the German town of Bochum. The “Neues Gymnasium Bochum” high school consists of two intertwined annular structures encompassing the entrance hall and a green inner courtyard.

A translucent inflated membrane roof admits the daylight while open galleries, curved walls and offset floors create a dynamic atmosphere conducive to communication and interaction. The airtight façade with exterior sun protection, use of the night air for cooling purposes, the storage mass provided by the concrete ceilings, and a solar energy system mean the school complex is able to achieve the energy efficiency standard of a passive house.

DORMA's contribution to the project
