Corporate companies, such as DORMA, have always encouraged personnel to participate in a sport or group physical activity as a form of team building and client entertainment. Historically golf has dominated the corporate sporting landscape, but over the past five years, Cycling with specific reference to mountain biking (or MTB), has seen significant growth as the new executive sport. Mountain Biking is particularly popular in South Africa because of the beautiful scenery, idyllic climate and varied terrain. Like Golf, MTB allows you to get fit and live a healthy lifestyle whilst socializing with colleagues, peers or patrons. Less than two years ago, DORMA SA Regional Director, Shaun Frayne, took interest in mountain biking and has inspired DORMA SA employees and clients to do the same. Shaun says that Mountain Biking gives him “a real sense of inner peace as he loves the outdoors and the splendor of the country as well as igniting his competitive spirit”.

Along the trail, Shaun came across Nico Pfitzenmaier. Nico is a former World Mountain Bike Champion and skills coach who was the inspiration and pioneer of Team DORMA SA, DORMA South Africa’s professional MTB team. Nico was born in Germany, but resides in Cape Town and represents South Africa in all international competitions. He is regarded as one of the best technical riders in the country and as brand ambassador, Nico hosts bimonthly DORMA SA MTB Clinics across South Africa, teaching the skills of the sport to architects and merchants wishing to improve their riding technique. Nico is the ideal representative for DORMA because he is a man of integrity. He never compromises on his holistic healthy lifestyle of regular exercise, 100% vegan diet (80% of which are raw and Superfoods) and uses only natural herbal remedies rather than synthetic medicine. In the 2015 ABSA Cape Epic, Nico broke his hand during Stage Five and did not take any pain killers for the last 2 stages (or 158 kilometers) of strenuous, technical cycling whilst still managing to finish second overall in the Masters Category. In addition, Nico speaks 7 languages, is a massage therapist and energy healer. Nico is an inspiration to those who meet him, quietly influencing them to also live a healthy life, making it easy for us to understand Shaun Frayne’s investment in him

Shaun saw the collaboration between DORMA SA and Nico Pfitzenmaier as a natural fit because “Nico is a man of great talent, dedication and honor all of which align with DORMA’s values”. The DORMA SA MTB Clinics encourage participants to have a positive attitude while living a healthy lifestyle and Nico is the epitome of this. Despite only knowing Nico for a short period of time, Shaun says that Nico has had a profound influence on his life. Since meeting Nico, Shaun has competed in some stage races which taught him to push through the tough climbs, adding that “cycling takes the same dedication as running a successful business”.
